Bedford Castle Mound
Client: Bedford Borough Council
Goal: Create an engaging visitor experience around a long-vanished castle.
Delivery: The castle today is little more than a mound, but we had a detailed account of the key siege of 1224. We told the story through a set of vandalproof etched metal panels in a Bayeaux Tapestry style that could be used to make rubbings with paper and crayon. The perimeter of the old keep was marked by slate slabs, which also acted as a timeline of the castle’s siege, fall and destruction.
Result: An accessible story embedded in the landscape, with plenty of scope for visitors to use their imagination.
