Newport Explorer
Client: Newport City Council;
Goal: Use smartphone technology to help residents learn about their city’s history and character at street level.
Delivery: We identified 40 ‘hotspots’ around the city centre with a strong Newport relevance through events, buildings, people or legends associated with that location. Using signage on lampposts and the City-Insights web application platform, we built a location-based website for each hotspot, designed to be viewed on a smartphone. A training session with council staff allowed them to expand and update the site as required.
Result: Visitors and residents can access oral history, vintage streetscenes, archive footage and historical accounts of famous events in the places where they actually happened, on their own device.
